Minimizing the Drag of Transonic Airfoil by Adjoint Method

• CFD simulation plays an important role in the design and optimization of airfoils. The simulation of the airfoil RAE2822 in subsonic condition using K-omega SST (Menter's Shear Stress Transport turbulence model) was generated using Ansys. The in-built adjoint solver was used to collect sensitive data. To minimize the drag of the airfoil while keeping the lift constant and preserve the chord length, the shape of the airfoil was optimized through mesh morphing. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the adjoint method and showed a drastic decrease in the drag from the airfoil.
