Summary

I started a career as a site engineer on a construction company in the Philippines. I was involved on several multi-story building projects and shopping malls. After nearly 2 years of working locally, I decided to accept an international job offer, I joined a Singapore government-owned consultancy company focusing on Infrastructure and Urban Development. My projects that I was assigned to mainly involved several government projects, particularly on Soil Investigations, Land Reclamations and Constructions of Singapore mega ports.

Assist the Resident Engineers (RE) / Senior Resident Engineers (SRE) at on-site inspection based on the method statement provided by the contractor. Ensure that the quality of work is on the highest standards. Below are the detailed task, duties, and responsibilities on the different works I’m involved with.

  • Monitoring & supervision of pre-SI works for land and marine bore holes and Cone Penetration Test (CPT), and topographical / aerial, hydrographic, side scan sonar and marine seismic works.
  • To witness Borehole drilling & sampling activity
  • To maintain and keep proper documentation of site records and reports submitted by contractor.
  • To ensure that the contractor will strictly follow safety guidelines and comply with submitted and approved specifications, standards, and procedures.

Role: Resident Technical Officer

Assist the Resident Engineers on-site inspection based on the method statement provided by the contractor. Ensure that the quality of work is on the highest standards.

  • In charge of all the site inspection on land, marine & caisson works. Send a detailed report after each activity completed and properly document it on the Daily Report. Below are the detailed task, duties, and responsibilities which are categorized based on different scope of works I’m involved with.

    Marine Works:
    Marine Soil Investigation & Hydrographic Surveys: Side Scan Sonar Survey, Marine Seismic Surve & Marine CPT’s.
  • Dredging: Supervised all the dredging activities done on basin and sandkey area based on the approved construction drawing. Carefully checked the final termination depth if it meets the design strength criteria.
  • Rock Mound Construction: Checked all the rock mound rock barge deliveries based on the size criteria (sieve analysis and size measurement). Supervised the laying of class “B” rocks followed by Plate Load Test (PLT) to determine if reaches the designed strength prior to laying of class “C” rocks.
  • Rock Filter Construction: Checked all the rock filter rock barge deliveries based on the size criteria (sieve analysis and size measurement). Supervised the laying of class “C” rocks.
  • Hydro Survey and CPT Tests: Supervised several types of CPT tests (Pre dredging CPT, Slacking Soil CPT and Post Vibro Compaction CPT) and Hydro Graphic Surveys.
  • Vibro Compaction: Check vibro compaction activities by determining the correct GPS, compaction points and depths.
  • Caisson Infilling and Sand Backfilling: Supervised caisson infilling works by carefully check the infill material and checking the depth of the caisson cells. Check sand backfilling material prior to dumping and record the dumping grid/chainage upon dumping.
  • Clay and Sand Delivery: To check all sand deliveries (TSHD / Long Distance Sand Supply / Pelican Barge) and clay deliveries (hopper barge / flat top barge) entering the project.
  • Scour Protection: To supervise scour protection installation. To check the geotextile material dimensions prior to rock laying. To check the rocks material are within the design specifications.

Caisson Works:

  • To check concrete quality by doing slump test.
  • To supervise the proper installation of reinforcement bars (bottom bars, starter bars, hunch bars, side bars and top bars). To carefully check all the lapping length, dimensions, and diameters.
  • To check all steel formwork alignment and cleanliness as stipulated in the specifications of different caisson types.
  • To supervise the concreting works of caisson walls, and check external surface of cast walls for honeycombs.
  • To check if proper slip-form lifting speed is being done during casting to prevent honeycombs and concrete cold joints.
  • To check the application of silane coating and caisson dimensions prior to caisson launching at floating dock.
  • To supervised caisson joint and box culvert construction. To properly check rebar installation, formworks installation, concrete quality, and properly document the crack mapping inspection.

Land Works:

  • To supervise various Soil Investigation Works, Topographic Surveys and CPT’s.
  • To supervise sand capping works, Soil Instrumentation Installation (Piezometer, Water Stand Pipe and Extensometer), Installation of Pre-Fabricated Vertical Drain (PVD), Sand Surcharge and Soil Investigation Activities (CPT and Borehole).
