Marine firefighters specialize in extinguishing ship fires, conducting maritime rescues, and handling medical incidents within territorial waters. They operate specialised vessels equipped with high-powered fire pumps, managing intense, confined-space, and high-temperature blazes on steel structures. Personnel undergo a five-week course, covering firefighting, HAZMAT, and medical, with some cross-trained as EMTs. With use of specialised, high-pressure foam/water systems and increasingly, drones (UAVs) and unmanned surface vessels to improve safety, we must handle adverse weather, navigate complex vessel layouts, and perform, often in high-heat conditions, up to 1,000°C in engine rooms.
