A graduant from the NUS High School's Class of 2021, I am currently waiting to be enrolled into NUS's 24/25 Academic Year with the Engineering Scholarship. I have recently completed my 2 years of National Service, and am looking for a temporary position till the Academic Year begins. I wish to pick up new valuable skills in a new environment that hopefully can mature my personality and prepare me for the working world in the future.
Under the Environment Interest Group, I led a project titled Systematic Change, which aimed to create a more sustainable, self-sustaining culture of environmental awareness in NUS High. Throughout the year, I actively met with the principal and the canteen vendors to get approval of our proposal to ban straws. It was the steppingstone for many more initiatives throughout the year. As the leader, I saw the power of perseverance and how it steered us through the numerous obstacles we encountered such as the pandemic and the lack of support at the start of the project, eventually leading to its success. This experience fostered effective leadership skills, helping me to understand what it is like to cope with heavy responsibilities on my shoulders. This project, along with the other leadership positions I have taken up throughout my high-school years, has allowed me to learn how to communicate effectively and work well in a team.
I had the opportunity to interact with patients of different backgrounds, transporting them from their homes to the daycare center. Throughout the journey, I had to ensure the safety and well-being of all the patients. I was also able to take a peek into the life of healthcare workers, and assist them in their duties at the daycare center. The interactions with the nurses, doctors, and patients made me realize that patients responded best when they were given a listening ear. I saw every medical staff member go the extra mile to meet their needs and ensure the patients’ satisfaction. It struck me that a doctor’s job goes beyond assessing a patient’s conditions and prescribing medication; it also entails developing an emotional connection with any patient to assure that they are in safe hands. Assisting the staff has also provided me with the experience of working under pressure, reminding me of the need for composure when working under stressful conditions like managing many things at once.
Titled Investigating the Number of 5G Small Cells Required in Hospot Areas of Singapore, I picked this project up with minimal background knowledge of coding and computer science. This experience allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, and take up a new challenge and pick up new skills quickly. With my adaptability and ability to apply what I learnt within a short period of time, I produced a precise code that could generate relevant results for our project. This project managed to pick up 2 awards in the Science & Engineering Fair 2021.
