• Keeping of 8 -12 navigational watch.
• Taking charge of mooring and unmooring operation.
• Keeping of cargo watch in port thereby assisting in cargo operations.
• Maintaining stability by carrying out ballast and de-ballasting operation.
• Correction and maintenance of nautical publications.
• Carrying out GMDSS daily, weekly and monthly test as well as all associated tests.
• Maintenance and upkeep of all deck portable fire fighting equipment and lifesaving appliances.
• Ensuring safety and security of the ship and personnel working under him.
• Preparation of port papers for master.
• Maintaining inventory of bonded stores.
• Preparing monthly bond accounts.
• Preparing schedules of training and drills under the guidance of chief officer.
• Maintaining records of drills and onboard trainings.
• Maintenance, stowage and labeling of all flags, signaling apparatus and shapes.
• Reviewing and renewing of notices and procedures posted on the bridge and accommodation.
• Tasks as assigned by the Master.

Performs work pertaining to general maintenance, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas that are the responsibility of the Deck Department.

• Stand watch on deck department of merchant ship.
• Perform lookout duty.
• Take a turn at ship's wheel.
• Work with bridge equipment.
• Clean and perform maintenance on ship.
• Work with deck equipment.
