JOSHUA TAN

Undergraduate Year 4 Physics

Summary

I am a deeply curious and passionate individual who constantly seeks to broaden my abilities and understanding in the realm of Science of Technology. My foundational journey as an Engineering student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, with the development of products, such as a self-rehabilitation glove for stroke patients, opened my eyes to the transformative potential of technological innovations built upon the understanding of scientific phenomena. In my current pursuit as a Fourth-year Physics major with a minor in Computer Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS), I am seeking to further hone both my understanding of the fundamental workings of reality, through tackling some of the current complex problems in physics, developing advanced computational techniques to aid in this work, and to further push my capabilities to harness the power of a rich understanding of Science

Work History

Final Year Project

National University of Singapore
10.2024 - Current
  • Performed an investigation into the effects of Laser Induced Transformation of recovered Silicon Carbon Composite samples
  • Modified Matlab code to produce geometric simulations of the material size distribution
  • Conducted various experimental measurement techniques such as Photoluminescence, Raman Spectroscopy, Bright Field Microscopy and Spectroscopy & SEM to characterize the material

Voluntary Software Developer

Global Village of Hope
06.2022 - 07.2022
  • Designed a Finite State Machine (FSM) for the purpose of tallying and acting upon incoming online donations which were previously verified manually, as the first step to enable the charity organisation to expand its operations overseas
  • Implemented the FSM in Java code (Node JS), and integrated it into GVH’s website and other backend resources to construct the online automated receipt system, which was successfully deployed
  • Developed a project timeline, handled workflows and work distribution with a team of 3 developers
  • Managed team deadlines and project targets while also reporting on current employment status and future developmental plans

Team leader, Stage Presenter, Finalist for the IMDA Youth Innovation Awards 2019

05.2019 - 05.2019
  • Designed the project showcase and booth presentation: Setting up a demonstration plan, executing operations and contingencies for live demonstration of the project
  • Planned and presented a 3-minute pitch on stage towards a live audience and panel of judges
  • Selected as a Finalist out of over 60 teams from local and regional polytechnics and universities
  • Only polytechnic team selected out of the 24 finalists to compete on stage via a 3-minute pitch against other university teams

Final Year Project - Design and Creation of an Electromyography actuated glove for the hand rehabilitation of stroke patients

Ngee Ann Polytechnic
01.2017 - 01.2019
  • Technical Component: Enabled the glove to move in sync with unique hand gestures by programming the scripts for communication between the Myo band (Electrical muscle signal detector) and the glove in Python (programming language)
  • Project Management: Formulated the project execution plan by instituting development milestones, establishing work schedules and managing logistics
  • Internal and External Achievements: (1) Selected for the Final Round of IMDA’s Youth Innovation Awards 2019, involving the presentation of the latest technological innovations by local and overseas tertiary institutions (2) Featured in an article by TODAY Online, with one-on-one interviews

Presenter and Assistant Mechanic in the building and navigating of a drone through an obstacle course for the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition (SAFMC) Category D

05.2018 - 05.2018
  • Designed and planned the slides for presentation, using Google slides
  • Oversaw the flow of presentation and assigned presentation roles to a group of 5 team members
  • Assembled parts of the drone for it to perform seven designated tasks
  • Made 1-2 minute repairs to the drone on three occasions to enable it to fly again after it crashed
  • Delivered a presentation that judges praised as 'interesting': instead of using the standard A1 size poster (based on organisers’ expectations), we delivered our presentation using an automated scroll that was similar to a slideshow presentation

Infographic designer and creator in project for Singapore Frontier Challenge(SFC) mini challenge for alternative energy solutions

05.2017 - 06.2017
  • Identified key points in the report for conversion into an infographic
  • Designed and structured the flow of the presentation of information in the infographic using piktochart, an online website containing tools and templates, which allow for the ease of creating customised infographics
  • Achieved first place with a proposal on Concentrated Photovoltics (CPVs), a special type of solar cells with higher levels of efficiency than normal solar cells at cheaper costs, thus enabling widespread deployment to boost our effectiveness in harvesting solar energy
