Work History

Mechanical Design Engineering Intern

Tesla
01.2024 - 05.2024
  • Department: Semi Truck, Battery Structures
  • Designed a breadbox representative to the Semi battery pack, brake formed from sheet metal, to validate and test the pack design, sealing interfaces, and venting strategy during battery runaway events
  • Coordinated with multiple suppliers across the United States, Asia, and Europe to design a thermal vent by determining specifications such as opening pressure, assembly requirements, reliability requirements, and datum strategies
  • Validated thermal vents by designing a test fixture and running impulse tests to determine how dimensional variability affects performance
  • Designed a roll formed sleeve for mass production to mechanically seal the battery pack during battery runaway by surfacing in 3DX and incorporating supplier DFM feedback to reduce cost, reduce mass, and improve manufacturability
  • Wrote a MATLAB script correlating temperatures within modules to battery pack pressures using heat transfer and state equations to model the convective heat transfer between the cells and the air in the battery pack
  • Specced the largest 2-way and 4-way datum pins on the Semi battery pack to design for accelerations on the production line by conducting hand calculations and FEA analysis using SimSolid

Manufacturing Automation Development Engineering (MADE) Intern

Tesla
05.2023 - 08.2023
  • Led a project to validate and troubleshoot newly acquired battery module assembly fixtures used in the M3Y line by determining the root cause of why new fixtures were stopping the line, resulting in a 25% increase in available capacity
  • Identified robotic control failures within battery module assembly lanes affecting dimensional quality and coordinated with other engineering teams and maintenance technicians to correct faulty equipment, reducing unplanned downtime by 30 minutes per shift
  • Developed a MATLAB script to analyze and quantify metrics associated with battery assembly such as process capability indices
  • Analyzed cell data using MySQL and FileZilla to perform root cause analysis to document repeated quality concerns with battery equipment which led to an improvement in first pass yield by 8%
  • Supported the realignment and Gage R&R of a vision system within battery assembly lanes by pulling dimensional data from Minitab

Deployable Aerial Vehicle Experiment (DAVE)

Space Technologies and Rocketry at Berkeley
08.2021 - 03.2023
  • Drafted a CAD model in SolidWorks for the wing deployment mechanism of DAVE after ejection from a rocket by utilizing pre-loaded torsion springs and a brake formed steel bracket fastened to the fuselage so the wings could be folded to fit within the rocket
  • Analyzed the drag on DAVE's wings during flight to spec the torsion springs, ensuring DAVE's wings were maintained at a constant angle
  • Designed a sled using blue tube couplers to secure DAVE during launch and to protect DAVE from a black powder charge during ejection

Engineering Intern

Howmet Aerospace
06.2022 - 08.2022
  • Designed a planar auto-crimp machine in SolidWorks equipped with a transmission system to replace manually operated crimp presses to reduce headcount, allowing 1 operator to manage 4 machines
  • Analyzed SolidWorks FEA and performed hand calculations to verify the actuators yielded enough force to plastically deform each part
  • Coordinated with the quality and manufacturing engineering teams to develop and implement SOP's for an auto inspection machine, increasing the quality and repeatability of measurements during part inspection
  • Created example programs and supplemental videos to train current operators, and as references for future operators to troubleshoot
  • Generated savings of $200,000 annually per machine from time savings using the auto inspection machine instead of a manual inspection

Projects

SolGuard, Mechatronics Senior Capstone, August 2023, December 2023

  • Designed and prototyped a mechatronic umbrella that tracks and blocks the sun using a power transmission system and Arduino code
  • Led the integration of the mechanical drive system, electronics, and software, providing design constraints to different system owners
  • Specced the motor to drive the transmission system by using hand calculations to compute gear ratios, torque, and RPM requirements
  • Wrote the state machine in Arduino, implementing solar panels and limit switches to drive the transmission system and logic path

The Drop n' Store Shelf, September 2023, December 2023

  • Designed and prototyped a 4 bar linkage and transmission system that raises and lowers a cabinet with a push of a button
  • Calculated the maximum torque to spec a DC motor and design a transmission system to drive a 5 lb. load with a 10 second cycle time
  • Manufactured the shelf prototype by 3D printing the linkages and shelves, and by machining the gears and shafts of the transmission system
