The skills that I have acquired when working at POPMART such as team work, communication and adaptability are crucial in the early childhood sector. This is because as teachers we need to collaborate together to work on projects and lessons in order to provide the children with the best resources and experience. We also need to be open to constructive feedback and communicate with each other to avoid miscommunication or conflicts, creating a positive environment for the children to learn in. Communication skills comes in place when interacting with parents as well. Being able to understand parents concerns and the right way to voice out our concern is crucial.
Being adaptable means being able to adapt to different people working styles, so that we will know how to support one another. Working here has trained me to to adapt fast to the environment and people. This is because I often get allocated to help out at different stores when they are in need of manpower. This skill would help me in the centre as learn to support and work with teachers with different methods of classroom management as well as teaching styles.
At Editor's Market (Ngee Ann City), my duties include:
- Assisting customer queries at shop floor and fitting room
- Steaming of clothes
- Ensuring that clothes on racks are organised and neat
- Placing clothes back on racks
- Hanging clothes at fitting room
- Taking of stock from storeroom
While working here, I have acquired different skills such as resiliency and communication skills. I got to hone my communication skills when I assist customers with their queries. I got to learn how to stay calm and remain professional when dealing with unreasonable customers. This also helped me with my problem solving skills when I try to offer different ways to help solve the problem or to come to a common ground with customers. During peak period or festive periods such as Christmas, I learnt to push through and challenge myself to the limit even though it gets physically tiring.
Resiliency is very important when it comes to dealing with children. As educators, there are periods where it can get very stressful and overwhelming especially when dealing with a difficult child. However, we must always push ourselves and not give up on the child. We must always be reminded that the children are our priority.
In my internship programme, I was assigned to the K2 class.
My duties include:
- Observing my focus child on his strengths and weaknesses
- Designing lesson plans and teaching aids to support children
- Assisting my host teacher in lessons, projects
- Health check and meal serving
- Implementing lessons
When I first joined the class, I felt very overwhelmed as these children were different from the children who I have interacted with before. They are harder to manage as these children mostly come from lower income families. However, as an educator, I persevered and found ways to bond and interact with them. Through getting to know them better over the months, I learnt their different patterns and found different ways to manage them. I realised that every child is different. They have their own learning styles, way of wanting to be managed and supported. I grew to love them as each day passes by. I wanted to make an impact on their lives. Thus, each lesson I did, I ensured to craft lesson plans that are catered to their interest and needs.
Through this experience, I have also honed my communication skills when interacting with my colleagues as well as the parents. I have learnt to manage differing views with my colleagues and negotiate with them, keeping in mind the children as our priority.
On this 1 month attachment, I got assigned to a K2 class. Through this attachment, I got to experience teaching a class. It was indeed stressful for the first time, however, it made me realise my areas of improvement. This experience also allowed me to learn how to create a learning corner for children, what are appropriate resources to put at a learning corner.
On this 2 week attachment, I was assigned to a N1 class. Through this attachment, I got an insight on the role and duties of an early childhood educator. I also learnt about the operations of the centre and the children's routines.
