During my time in orthopedic ward 51, I was given the opportunity to revisit, reapply and further enhance my core nursing competencies, putting my previously acquired skills back into practice. Utilizing critical thinking skills when assessing patients needs, enabling timely identification of concerns potentially requiring intervention. Additionally, I learned the intricate process of administering medications via different routes. This invaluable exposure not only solidified my foundational nursing abilities but also deepened my understanding of patient care within the specialized context of an orthopedic setting.
Introduction to mental health care in Ward 60A, was insightful and transformative experience. I learned about unique challenges and rewards of mental health nursing, and how I had a role to play in the recovery process. Providing support for patients on their journey towards an improved status, I learnt how to effectively communicate with patients using active listening skills and empathy to build rapport during interactions.
My posting in Obstetrics Ward 81 provided me with valuable experience in antenatal and postnatal care. Assisting with these critical stages of maternity allowed me to develop comprehensive understanding of the needs and care precautions for both mothers and newborns. Through providing compassionate care and empathetic communication during challenging situations, this help improve patient satisfaction subsequently enhancing patient care by providing assistance with daily living activities and effectively communicating with healthcare team members.
My first hospital attachment at Ward 13 was a significant milestone in my nursing education. Starting with the basics, I learned to assist with patients’ activities of daily living, which gave me insight into nursing in a geriatric setting. I learnt to contribute to safe and hygienic environment by adhering to strict infection control protocols and maintaining proper hygiene practices. This experience sparked a deep compassion within me to help people, and as the appointed leader of my team, I guided my fellow members to the best of my ability, further developing my leadership and teamwork skills.
