Mentoring Experience
undefinedI started the hobby of growing our own herbs and vegetables with my husband last year after we moved into our new place with a rooftop. There is plenty of sunlight, dew and fresh air. We started with basil (both Thai and Sweet) using stem-cuttings and grew pots and pots of them. We gave them away to friends and relatives and recently, to my school for our sustainability programme for the Primary Four classes. With the introduction of the new syllabus, we wanted our students to learn to grow their own vegetables or herbs through stem-cuttings, to be able to apply what they have learnt from their textbooks to real life and to adopt a sustainable behaviour. I also grow my own vegetables like Nai Bai from seeds, blue-pea plant and cherry tomatoes. It's very satisfying to be able to eat from our own garden. One unforgettable experience was the growth of a watermelon seedling from birds' droppings. From a seedling to the ripening of the fruit took just about three months. We only managed to have one successful watermelon which was yellow, juicy and sweet!
