  • Two competing consortia led by JGC and Saipem are undertaking the FEED to develop design of a 2.5 mpta FLNG for location in 650 metres of water in the Abadi field in Indonesia
  • As substructure Engineering lead I was responsible for managing a team of multi discipline engineers overseeing the FEED Contractors submissions
  • This includes mechanical and structural engineers as well as naval architects
  • The facility is being designed to receive from subsea two phase fluid flow, this being processed on board to produce two export products
  • The first being LNG which will be processed, liquefied and stored on-board the facility within SPB tanks
  • The LNG will be offloaded in the side by side configuration by conventional loading arms to LNG carriers
  • The second product is condensate which will be stored on-board prior to export by conventional tandem offloading
  • Duties include ensuring that the design submitted by the Consortia comply with Company Specifications, Classification Society and regulatory authority requirements
  • This includes ensuring that discipline engineers review the documents in a timely professional manner, as well as authorizing the return of the documents to the Consortia
  • Leading hull team during FEED HAZID/HAZOP reviews as well as 3D model and workshops concerned with operations and maintenance, HFE and mechanical handling

  • Project Manager working on a new business opportunity venture for Shell
  • This involved the development of small scale transportation, storage and transfer of LNG for use as a fuel for transportation
  • This involved development on new technology, procedures and international regulations
  • This new development was centred on two major locations, North West Europe and USA/Canada
  • My duties during this project included working with a team of multi discipline team on the development of a long term customer base in both locations
  • Developing the most cost effective, safe supply chain from the major LNG producers to the customers
  • This included the development of LNG storage and propulsion technology with Wartsila for the marine distribution
  • Leading a research and development project with regards to, a new transfer technology for the small scale LNG applications, utilising hose technology and motion compensated support equipment
  • Obtaining approvals from both US coastguard and Transport Canada on the application of transportation and utilisation of LNG as fuel on the inland waterways of North America
  • Within Europe this likewise included extensive engagement with Governments, Government Agencies and port authorities
  • Project Assurance was an essential activity during this concept select, define and execute project
  • During the course of this project I became registered with the British Standards Institute as an “Expert” in the transfer of LNG
  • This involved me being a member of group of learned individuals charged with the development of an ISO Guideline on the safe transfer of LNG in small scale applications
  • I also participated in a working group under the guidance of the Royal Academy of Engineers investigating new fuel technology for maritime transportation applications.

Project: Brunei LNG Carriers Acquisition Program

  • Appointed as Project Manager for several projects simultaneously
  • I was responsible for leading a multi discipline team through the various stages of this project, both from a technical and commercial perspective
  • This commenced by identifying the needs of both the Bruneian and Nigerian customers
  • Developing a Basis of Design and invitation to tender package for both projects
  • Potential suppliers of the new vessels were assessed against a matrix, developed with the customers
  • Tender packages from the suppliers were assessed against both customers’ requirements and developed based on Shell experience on similar projects
  • As well as the overall management of the project, my key role was the development of the project contracts
  • Both projects were progressed to the Contract Award stage
  • Overall project value 1.5 Bn USD
  • This involved the recycling of three LNG carriers in accordance to the Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling in China
  • The recycling project involved the development of Shell Shipping Ship Recycling Guideline, in accordance with the aforementioned convention
  • This was a world first with regards to an LNG carrier being recycled in this manner
  • Initial screening of recycling facilities was undertaken to obtain a short list of potential sites, considering the required schedule and size of the facility
  • I lead the audit team verifying the capability of the four shortlisted sites
  • Closure of the findings from these audits resulted in two facilities being approved for the recycling of the vessels
  • Subsequently I led the commercial and technical negotiations with the recycling facilities, resulting in a significant return to the owners on the sale of the vessels
  • I continued to supervise/audit the recycling of the vessels until the final completion of recycling certificate was obtained from the local Chinese authority
  • Project Value 100+ M USD
  • Preparation of and the management of the project budget including man hour spend was undertaken during the various phases of these projects.
  • Managed project timelines and resources effectively, ensuring on-time delivery of all milestones.

Project: China LNG Shipping New Build Project

  • During this Project I undertook a dual role, firstly as Project Manager for the project then later as the Construction Manager
  • This project involved the design and construction of the first LNG carriers to be built in China
  • A series of 5 LNG carriers were constructed in Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai
  • The vessels were constructed for a Chinese owner under the guidance and approval of the Chinese National Reform Committee
  • My role was to develop the design and manage the overall Project from London prior to moving to China
  • Whilst in China I led a team of multi discipline engineers overseeing the construction of the vessels
  • An important part of this position was the knowledge transfer to Chinese discipline engineers who had no previous LNG experience as well as limited or no construction supervision experience
  • The management of HSE within the shipyard was a significant challenge as no major international owner or oil major had constructed vessels in the facility before
  • All vessels were delivered to the owner at the agreed time.

  • As Construction Manager I was responsible for the construction of 5 LNG carriers for NLNG
  • My role was to ensure that the vessels were constructed in accordance to the design specification, Classification Society, Flag and International regulations
  • Leading a team of multi discipline engineers and undertaking a development program for a number of Nigerian staff
  • Ensuring that the vessels were constructed in accordance to the milestone schedule as well verifying that all payments were due to the construction facility
  • All vessels were completed on time or ahead of schedule as well as under contract budget
  • These LNG carriers were the first LNG carriers to be built in Korea for a foreign owner
  • Contract Value 900M USD
  • NLNG Train Six Project involved the procurement of a number of new build vessels for NLNG
  • This involved developing the Invitation to Bid package, submission to prequalified shipowners and shipyards, and the subsequent technical and commercial evaluation
  • The award of the long term charter agreement of the vessels was granted to NYK and Bergeson
  • My duties after the contract award was to act as Owners representative and ensure that the vessels were constructed to the agreed standard
  • This involved design appraisal and placement of an oversight supervisor in each construction location
  • Contract Value 1.08Bn USD
  • During this time, I was also the Project Manager within Shell responsible for the design and construction of the first phase of the Qatargas Q-Flex and Q-Max vessels

I have over (20) years broad-based international experience in the LNG Shipping, upstream oil and gas production industry in the design /construction / commissioning as Technical Director/Project Manager / Project Engineer representing both Shell and clients on both on shore & offshore on operational facilities. Experience covers project management, project development phases from basic engineering & conceptual studies / FEED through to detailed design on all aspects of LNG Shipping, oil & gas processing facilities including FPSO and FLNG. The early part of my career was spent developing and utilizing ship management skills. Over a period of 15 years as well as sailing on numerous types of vessels, up to and including the role of Chief Engineer. This provided me with the grounding to become a Technical Superintendent in Shell managed fleet. This included the day to day management of the vessels to refit development/implementation.
