Job Shadowing

Public, Private Hospitals and Outpatient Clinics
01.2023 - 10.2023

Alexandra Hospital Shadowing (public)

I was fortunate enough to be able to observe a minor surgical procedure which involved the removal of the dead layer of skin surrounding the pressure ulcer. There were also challenging situations which I saw the doctors having to remedy. A patient who was placed under a feeding tube had experienced mental deterioration due to old age and no longer had the ability to make informed decisions regarding his health. However, there were not many options to improve the elderly's patient's health condition and the doctors were tasked with breaking bad news, which the caretakers/relatives were not very receptive to.

Bukit Panjang Polyclinic (outpatient)

I learnt that these outpatient clinics followed a "teamlet" system which was different from the model that public hospitals adopted. This includes 1 care coordinator, 1 nurse and a doctor; patients will go through each station and the doctor would be able to provide an accurate prognosis of the patient's condition based on the nurse's initial review, increasing efficiency of the consultations. The triage rooms were mainly for dressing and treatment of wounds for patients.

Sengkang General Hospital (public)

I observed a patient who had ingested a lot of alcohol and had taken valproate alongside her drinks. This resulted in a functional decline and she was resting in the hospital after her jerking/blackout episode. Initially I had believed that this issue was due to bad habit, caused by an overconsumption of alcoholic beverage. However this was a much more complicated social issue as the patient was currently homeless and did not have the means to support herself financially. I witnessed how the doctor reassured the patient that he would request for social services to render their assistance and ensure that she is being adequately taken care of.

Gleneagles Private Hospital (Shadowed a Dermatology Specialist Clinic)

I had the privilege of observing an age wart removal procedure, where electrode therapy was used to burn off the wart on the patient which exposed the superficial area of the skin in which the patient can then rest to heal the wound. Observing how Dr Lim(Dermatologist) was so patient in explaining every detail of the patient's medical condition, I was deeply inspired by his breadth of knowledge and meticulous nature. I understood that this was truly the career for me, one that provided lifelong learning and honed my interpersonal skills.

National University Hospital (public)

I observed how the orthopedic surgeon went about his ward rounds alongside the junior doctors. There was a particular difficult situation that I witnessed. A patient had found the physiotherapist to be rather unreasonable, not taking into account her feelings during the therapy sessions. The patient was unhappy that the therapy session was longer than stipulated, lamenting that her concerns were not heard. The house officer tried to reason with the lady, exploring her concerns and proposing an alternative for the lady to go to a specialized physiotherapist clinic so she would have more say in the type of therapy sessions that she undergoes.

Club Service Director

Rotaract Club of Bukit Gombak
01.2022 - 01.2023
  • I have been active in my role in planning community volunteer events such as Project Tutortime for the children coming from financially disadvantaged families as well Project Dust and Shine (refurbishment of the homes of those living alone in 1/2 room rental flats)
  • This also extends to other club projects that I have done such as bonding events that I planned like the RACBG Amazing Race which will be taking place this March 2024
  • Also, the Dust and Shine project has really allowed me to gain insight into the vulnerable groups in our society, those often-neglected groups
  • I learnt that there are many unfortunate circumstances that people face especially in such a fast-paced lifestyle and despite an affluent society, there are many challenges that can surface due to both mental and financial stress
  • By simply putting our minds and being considerate of the people around us, we can understand more about their plight and through this I was able to help them clean up their homes and reorganise their items
  • Seeing the smile on the flat owners’ face would never fail to warm my heart and I truly treasure the privileges that I have
  • I have also understood the value of care and concern, in that we must always be ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and we should never be judgemental of them
  • Through these experiences, I felt very relieved that I had the ability to create a much more conducive environment for these needy groups
  • I look forward to organising more events for my club

Executive Committee Member for Event Planning

I have displayed extensive planning skills and analysis skills as well as caring for my juniors and stepped up as seniors this year to give our juniors the best experience. Despite the initial unfamiliarity with my roles due to a lack of experience, I was determined to become a role model that my juniors could emulate. From participating in debriefs to helping my fellow juniors with their singing, I also took the initiative to help in the organization of choir events which included bonding events to build up our sense of camaraderie. As such, I felt that my proposals and reflection have helped made Choir a much more pleasant place for all.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

During my first BJJ grappling competition when I was 15, I was confident that I was going to outmatch my opponents. However, in the first matchup, I was deeply defeated due to my lack of humility and caution. I reflected and sought criticism from my coach, taking in the different insights as to how I should have gone about my match. In the next matchup, I made sure to stay calm and composed, only striking when the time was right. Alas, this time I emerged victorious, submitting my opponent with precision, winning a silver medal in the process.

Junior College (2021-2022)

  • Served as the Class Leader from 2021-2022

I was the class leader for 22S03A (2021-2022). During the start of the year where everyone was still relatively new to one another, it was extremely arduous to gel everyone together especially because everyone was unfamiliar with one another, and Covid-19 just added a lot more limitations in terms of seating arrangements. There was also a distinct class division, as most of my classmates would just hang out with their friend groups and this contributed to unnecessary tensions and exclusiveness within cliques. However, I attempted to host class outings to get the class together for lunch after school and this proved to be a great success because it made many of my fellow classmates step out of their comfort zones and forge closer bonds with one another. Through these class outings, everyone was able to get to know about one another better which contributed to a jovial class environment. This was fundamental towards putting aside everyone’s differences where we can all strengthen our class spirit. I was also key to the effective dissemination of information from the teachers to the students. Whenever the teachers want to relay a message to the students, I would always make sure to send an extra reminder in the class group chat to alert my peers of the critical things that they need to do. Therefore, as a liaison between my class and the teachers, I ensured that everyone stayed ahead of deadlines and were kept in the loop about crucial information.

  • Served as the Orientation Group Leader for the newly inducted students (2022)

I was an Orientation Group Leader (OGL) in 2021 for the Y5s in Junior College. I worked in a team alongside two other OGLs to integrate my juniors into the JC life. During our first meeting with the OGlings (Juniors), I started with icebreakers. A challenge we faced was involving everyone in the activities. It was not easy facilitating active discussions amongst everyone. Some OGlings were very shy and this became a challenge two days into the orientation as they remained rather reclusive. I encouraged them to step out of their comfort zone, rallying the support of everyone to make them feel welcomed. This proved to be beneficial because the OGLings were inspired by us and they started initiating conversations among themselves. Slowly but surely, with time, they started becoming more active in playing the different games together with their peers. By distributing our roles between one another, we were able to collectively handle the administration matters and uphold the great spirits of the OGLings. Overall, I attained a great sense of accomplishment from this meaningful experience.

  • Represented School for the Cyberthon Competition(Computer Science Society) 2021

  • Played Competitive Frisbee as part of the School Team

I am from the Raffles Ultimate Frisbee CCA. I had been engaging in a plethora of Frisbee related activities during my Secondary School days and thus already cultivated an undying passion for the sport since my early days. Therefore, I wanted to take my devotion to the sport to another level, joining the CCA in hopes of achieving success together as a team be it winning competitions as well as team bonding. I was also heavily committed to the CCA, dedicating extra time outside of the CCA curriculum hours to train together with my peers. This came as a very vital experience and pushing through pain alongside my teammates compelled me to put in even more effort into the sport. Despite the arduous trainings and tough regimens, I was able to exhibit good chemistry with my batchmates and by instilling trust in my teammates, we were able to communicate much more effectively during our games which ultimately ensured a good flow throughout the competitions. From this, I really understand the true importance of teamwork as it is vital to setting a common vision and paving the way to success. Although there were many restrictions set by Covid-19, I would often initiate outside training schedules to accommodate my batchmates so that we could simulate the different set plays and structures, taking the opportunity to hone our Frisbee mechanics. This year, despite not being able to participate in IJC due to complications, I was there for the whole-hearted support of my friends and family who have nurtured and shaped me over the years. This whole journey has truly transformed who I am and instilled in me the values of grit, resilience, teamwork, all of which I am truly grateful for.

Community Service

Rotaract Club of Bukit Gombak

In my time as the Club Service Director, I have been active in my role in planning community volunteer events such as Project Tutortime for the children coming from financially disadvantaged families as well Project Dust and Shine (refurbishment of the homes of those living alone in 1/2 room rental flats). This also extends to other club projects that I have done such as bonding events that I planned like the RACBG Amazing Race which will be taking place this March 2024. Also, the Dust and Shine project has really allowed me to gain insight into the vulnerable groups in our society, those often-neglected groups. I learnt that there are many unfortunate circumstances that people face especially in such a fast-paced lifestyle and despite an affluent society, there are many challenges that can surface due to both mental and financial stress. By simply putting our minds and being considerate of the people around us, we can understand more about their plight and through this I was able to help them clean up their homes and reorganise their items. Seeing the smile on the flat owners’ face would never fail to warm my heart and I truly treasure the privileges that I have. I have also understood the value of care and concern, in that we must always be ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and we should never be judgemental of them. Through these experiences, I felt very relieved that I had the ability to create a much more conducive environment for these needy groups. I look forward to organising more events for my club.

I also participated in a public health information research campaign aimed at dispelling misconceptions of COVID-19 vaccines in the elderly. This came at a critical point, inspiring me to contribute to this cause. Initially, the elderly were wary of taking the vaccine as they resisted the idea of Western medicine. I contributed valuable research on the benefits of receiving vaccination to increase vaccine acceptance among Singapore's elderly population. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions,I had to schedule weekly online meetings with my team. Confusion arising from the delegation of tasks was a huge hurdle. To combat this, I came up with detailed guidelines on the expected attendance and took meeting minutes for those unavailable so they are kept updated. This made me cognisant of such campaigns in broadening the reach of medicine, and urged me to discover various ways to create an impact in the healthcare sector.

Catholic High Overseas Volunteer Project OVIA   (Overseas Values in Action to Danang, Vietnam)

In Secondary 3, I went for an overseas immersion trip with my school to Vietnam for a volunteer project. We worked with the Maison Chance School to conduct a week of lessons for the children. They had pre-existing speech difficulties and mental health conditions which affect their learning. Some required more special assistance and I took the opportunity to learn from the teachers as to how one should go about managing them. It was challenging as their psychological problems were often linked to mental health issues like ADHD, autism. I learnt the importance of patience and tailored my lessons to the specific needs of the children. Making some appropriate changes to my lesson resulted in a rewarding and smooth-sailing experience for everyone. We got to interact with these kids using sign language and other non-verbal communication. We adopted the role of caretakers as we needed to ensure that they rested during their break times and gave them the best company through our lessons. Ultimately, bringing a smile to the children’s faces gave us a sense of accomplishment.
