I accomplished by PhD work from Department of Biotechnology, MGM University of Health Sciences, which is one of a state of art medical universities in India. The title of my thesis is “To determine the prevalence of serological and molecular markers of hepatitis B virus in voluntary blood donors from Maharashtra.”
National Rural Health Mission partially funded the project to review the status of a blood safety program in a state of Maharashtra.
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of HBV serological and DNA markers in donor blood bags in the Maharashtra regions, search for a strategy to ensure HBV free unit for blood transfusion, and to provide the most recent baseline data for planning and monitoring of blood safety and quality assurance in blood banks.
The study significantly highlighted the gaps in quality assurance in National blood safety services, which further led to a revised blood safety policy. The study data represented as regional data for the WHO epidemiological data. The most important contributions of the project were the mapping and distribution of HBV strain in state of Maharashtra. The project considered as pioneer leading project for many research questions.
