DUKE-NUS Dermatology Student Interest Group (SIG)

  • President (AY 2023/2024), Vice-President (AY 2022/2023), Exco member (AY 2021/2022)


1) Research Talk 2023 & 2024

  • Organized the annual Research Talk aimed to inspire fellow students to undertake research as well as provide networking and research opportunities for students
  • Invited distinguished guest speakers, senior consultant dermatologists with a vast research background to share their research interests and current ongoing research activities
  • Delegated tasks to fellow team members to ensure good spread of roles while providing guidance to new team members
  • Successfully hosted the event with more than 30 attendee, with excellent feedback and at least 3 students scoring research opportunities with the guests invited


2) World Congress of Dermatology (WCD) Collaboration

  • Collaborated with the organizers of WCD in providing student-volunteers for WCD, the largest international dermatology congress held only once every 4 years which had over 11,000 participants
  • Effectively communicated with WCD organizers to obtain volunteer roles, discussed manpower as well as ensure food provided for volunteers
  • Met with good outcomes as volunteers obtained the invaluable opportunity to access an international congress otherwise only available to delegates, and allowed them to interact with other like-minded researchers


3) World Psoriasis Day collaboration (2022 & 2023)

  • Annual collaboration with National Skin Centre (NSC) nurses and doctors to provide student-volunteers for World Psoriasis Day, a one-day event to connect with the public and draw awareness on Psoriasis
  • Delegated tasks to fellow team members while taking a supporting role
  • Successfully pulled off the event with 4 student-volunteers and good feedback from NSC staff

Duke-NUS Y3 Research Scholarly Programme

Utility of Micro-needle sampling for the  diagnosis of superficial fungal skin infections – A prospective cohort study

  • Collaborating with National Skin Centre (NSC) and A*Star Research Laboratories (A*SRL) (Apr 2022 - Apr 2023)
  • Spearheaded a clinical research accessing the utility of microneedle devices for diagnosis of fungal skin infections, including formulation of the research question, , drafting of IRB, methodology, patient recruitment and sample collection, qPCR optimization, fungal culture and microscopy, analysis and discussion of results
  • Wrote up a research proposal and budget, delivered a five minute sales pitch of our research idea to the grant panel, and ultimately received a grant worth $100,000 for our research

1) Student mentorship 

  • Mentored junior students (Y2) in ward bedside tutorials. Guided their physical examination, investigations and management as well as presentation skills
  • Shared patient cases and learning points with other classmates and juniors
  • Volunteered to be student examiner for Y2 mock examinations in 2023 and 2024, giving constructive feedback and advice especially on how to study smart in medical school given the large syllabus


2) Peer support group

  • Organized peer support groups for classmates who needed to retake exams, including group study sessions, mentoring and frequent check ins and counseling.
  • Met with success as fellow classmates were returned with good results
  • Organized small group study sessions amongst classmates, including self-directed mock examinations with multiple back-to-back cases to mimic real exam setting
